Frequently Asked Questions about aerial ash scattering

  • Is aerial ash scattering new?

Actually it has been around for years. It has usually only been available to people who are in the field of aviation or happen to know a pilot. As cremation has become more and more popular the need to have choices as to what to do with the cremated remains has also grown. Many people feel that releasing the cremated remains of a loved one over a meaningful area provides a closure while also providing a release of your loved one's spirit in nature.

  • Why aerial scattering as opposed to scattering from land?

This is a personal choice. We believe that many people would prefer aerial scattering because it covers a larger area and also enhances the feeling that should you visit the area later that the spirit of your loved one is all around you.

  • How is the scattering accomplished?

After the ashes are transported to the airport they will then be placed in an aerial dispersal unit. Once over the desired position, they will be completely evacuated from the unit. The ashes will then fall gently to earth.

  • Are there any legal matters to be considered?

There are both federal and state regulations that must be adhered too. The federal ones involve the operation of the aircraft and the state ones involve the dispersal of ashes. There are also local regulations that must be checked before we can promise a site of your choosing.

  • Can we choose the site?

We will do everything possible to accomodate your wishes. As was stated above all legalities must be conformed with.

  • Are passengers allowed on the flight?

Yes, under certain circumstances. This can be a very emotional time, and safety is always our concern, so if the “pilot in command” feels that a passenger can safely come along we will certainly accommodate your wishes at no additional charge. We will also do our best to accommodate those that want to watch from the ground.

  • Will my service be one of many on a single flight?

No. Just as with burial in a cemetary, each service is separate. This is a solemn event and we treat each flight with the same respect and dignity as if this was our own last flight. Respect and Dignity will NEVER be compromised. You will know this after you contact us. A Last Wish flight will not be conducted until you have spoken with the president and chief pilot of Last Wish, Bill Fallon.

  • If I can’t be there, how will I know when the scattering is completed?

Last Wish, will send to a designated contact a certificate with information stating the Date, Time and Exact Geographic Coordinates of the scatterings. This will be signed by the Pilot in Command and by a witness.

  • How do we send you the ashes?

Last Wish will work in cooperation with the funeral director of your choosing. A representative of Last Wish will transport the ashes to the aircraft on the day of dispersal. This is done so that your loved one's ashes will always be in the care of those who can provide the proper care and respect.

  • What is the cost of this service?

The base price is $350.00 + a $50 fuel surcharge for services provided within a 50 mile radius of our home base in Fairfield, NJ (see map). Service beyond that area is available at an adjusted rate. We do offer a discount for veterans of the armed service as well as for police and firemen.
